A little edit Ive put together filmed around the Surrey area, filming on the occasional weekend this edit has been a long time in the making. Riding for Alonebmx team, putting in the hours at the park and on the street this is what we came up with, Enjoy.

Yanni Floros is an Adelaide based artist that trained at the National Art School in Sydney graduating as a sculpture major. Since then he has shown his work around Australia in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide and has been a finalist in art prizes such as the Dobell Drawing Prize 2010 and the Lethbridge 10000. His work extends across the disciplines of painting, sculpture and drawing and focuses on the pursuits of man and how those pursuits impact our development.

“I’ve always been interested in technology, especially the design of things and the way they’re put together. It goes deeper than that, when I view humanity as a whole I have to ask ‘what is it about us that wants to make all this?

From our humble beginnings we’ve demonstrated an amazing ability for progress, we’ve wanted ‘better’ and ‘more’, technology is only a part of it, but for me and the society we live in today it’s the part accessible and relatable for everyone. As we hurtle towards an unknown and uncertain future, technology and the way we use it will become increasingly more important. It has already become so integrated into our lives that I doubt many of us could live without it. As we build more and invent more, are we helping our humanity or are we robbing ourselves of it?”

Today the world celebrates the unofficially official Star Wars Day. This object of cultural value created by mastermind George Lucas inspired and influenced millions of people all over the world. And it seems that almost every graphic designer on this planet and dagobah system did an own version of this subject. That’s why I collected a few pieces from talented designers. I’m not going to go into the do’s or don’ts of typography, or the ways that things should or shouldn’t be represented. What I want to touch upon is the way in which typography is used within video.

Typography is a big thing when used in video; it features in the majority of online videos with an introducing title sequence (even if its very short). A title sequence is the first thing that is seen when we hit play. For a lot of people, it represents how the rest of the edit is built, edited and produced. Most of the time, the typography won’t reflect the edit as a whole. The skill of the filming and the cutting of the edit is forgotten once an initial opinion has been made by bad introduction. It’s always disappointing to see a well-constructed edit alongside typography that isn’t well thought out.

Using a good font and a simple design should enhance a movie, not detract from it. The way the typography is used at the start of a movie should reflect the rest of the video and pull the user in, keeping their attention as it moves into the rest of the edit.

A case study to focus on is the Art of Flight. This movie, shot by Red Bull, is an inspiring use of typography, soundtracks, voice over and effects, to create a groundbreaking trailer and film.

Within the trailer, the typography is used sparingly with one word displayed in empty scenery. Once the Red Bull logo is shown, a completely new font is used, and due to of the complexity of the logo, a minimal background is used.

Aside from the amazing filming and directing that this trailer has, the first time I saw it, It was impressive how the locations were presented incorporating 3D typography floating within the surrounding clouds. This is a classic example of simple but effective typography. This can be created easily within a 3D application but what you should look at is the way the text will be incorporated into the edit so it feels like its meant to be there.

I will leave you with this thought – once you have finished cutting up your edit or film, take care to look at the typography used. Can it be better? Can it be represented differently? A little more time spent on it will create an all-round better product.

Every once in a while there comes a game that just “awe” you on every step…

FEZ  by Polytron is just that kind of game that is as much an art experience as it’s just very thoughtful game mechanic. Released for X-Box Live Arcade the game is basically a puzzle game revolving around very clever idea of 3D rotating the game world by 90 degree angle while always keeping platforming to a 2D plane. The story of the game follows a character named “Gomez” on a voyage to save the world after he gains the ability to move in 3D, FEZ is using this in very clever ways throughout the plot of the game as all the characters are aware that they are in fact 2D.

The game design and art that follows are probably vast enough to write a book about pixel design (here execute with 3D engine in a way resembling Minecraft) in all its glory. It’s definitely one of the best executed ideas since Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, but what I really liked about the game is that it reminded me of Another World (Out of This World) – as there is a big emphasis on exploration and constant sense of wonder. You should at least give it a test go as the trial version is free. More about the game here.
